Professional Licensing and Proceedings
Bernfeld DeMatteo and Bernfeld has years of experience defending New York professionals that are facing disciplinary hearings. A professional license is the authorization to practice and use a professional title in New York State. Your license is valid for life unless a disciplinary hearing states otherwise.
Many of our professional licensing clients are fellow attorneys who trust us with the futures of their careers. Our firm’s senior attorney, David Bernfeld, has fought for the rights of licensed workers and lawyers for over 40 years.
Disciplinary actions can disrupt a well-established career by resulting in:
- Suspension
- Termination
- Revocation
- Denial of a job or promotion
Any one of these consequences can change what you do to earn your living.
Our lawyers protect the rights and the livelihoods of professionals because a professional license is essential to their occupation and the ability to make a living. Bernfeld DeMatteo Bernfeld has represented clients such as:
- Union workers
- Teachers
- Physicians
- Nurses
- Accountants
- Attorneys
- Civil service workers— police officer, firefighter, correction’s officer
- Clients with Article 78 proceedings
The largest of these areas is our representation of nursing homes, where we institute annual rate challenges via Article 78 proceedings for approximately 15 nursing homes. We are regularly involved in administrative hearings before the New York State Department of Health and defend nursing home administrators and owners against state and federal fraud allegations, both civil and criminal. Additionally, we provide transactional representation to nursing home owners.
If you have been suspended or terminated from your public or private sector union job, if your license is under threat of suspension or revocation, or if you have an employment grievance against a municipal, city, or state government agency—we can represent you in court or before any administrative agency.
